Stephen Hanks of the FCA and a panel of experts will discuss the future of European financial regulation
Global Investor will host on Wednesday May 6 the second in a series of live video conferences entitled Post Brexit and Mifid II, looking at the hotly debated subject of European financial regulation in light of Brexit.
The video conference will begin at 9.30 on Wednesday when Stephen Hanks, from the Markets Policy division of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), will be invited to give the keynote presentation.
Hanks worked closely on the 2018 revision to the Markets In Financial Instruments Directive and is currently charged with establishing the UK’s future financial oversight regime as it pertains to European regulation and those of other jurisdictions round the world.
Hanks’ presentation will be followed by a panel discussion comprising legal, trading and market structure experts. The panel, moderated by Carolyn Jackson, partner at law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP, will reflect on the latest FCA update and discuss the following:
What will the UK’s departure from the European Union mean for European regulation and European regulated firms?
What are possible unintended consequences?
What are the emerging regulatory reporting challenges?
What has been the impact of the new Best Execution and research unbundling obligations?
What does the emergence of new trading venues mean for liquidity?
The panel includes: James Baugh, European head of market structure at Citigroup; Joseph Collery, head of trading at Comgest; Hasmita Patel, senior compliance officer at Marex Spectron; and Heiko Stuber, senior proposition manager of financial information at Swiss exchange SIX.
Stuber said ahead of the panel: “Two worlds, two sets of rules are going to co-exist… which means that data quality and consistent identifiers will become more crucial than ever. I am thrilled to be part of this Post Brexit Mifid conference to discuss this major industry topic.”
Collery added: “The question around the debate over continuous Lit trading versus SI, LIS and Frequent Batch Auctions and the potential savings is something I find particularly interesting and think will be valuable to discuss.”
